Our Grants

Thanks to the contributions of individual donors, corporations and foundations, we are able to make grants in the community that support our mission of creating pathways out of poverty for Bay Area families.
United Way’s Community Investment Team identifies local, top-performing programs are focused on created lasting change by addressing the underlying causes of poverty in the Bay Area.

United Way Grants

  • provide food, rent, utility and other basic needs assistance to families hardest hit by the economic crisis.
  • enroll children in health insurance and fund health clinics that serve low-income families.
  • boost the effectiveness of Bay Area poverty-fighting nonprofits by helping them measure results, expand services, plan for crises, and deepen management and volunteer teams.
  • Help Bay Area workers increase their incomes through training programs or higher education.
  • enable low-wage workers plan for their future through financial education and coaching.
  • Connect residents accessing mainstream financial services and matched savings accounts (i.e., Individual Development Accounts) to help build assets
  • expand community-school partnerships, which boost academic achievement by bringing essential social services to children and families at school sites
  • spread effective early literacy initiatives
  • improve the professional development, compensation and working conditions of early child care teachers
  • prevent youth from dropping out of school and provide exposure to and skill development for college or careers
  • help youth leaving the foster care system find stable employment and housing and access higher education
