Unemployed…worried about money…months of looking for work. Sound familiar? That was Briana’s story. After looking for work for almost a year, Briana got advice from her mom, a volunteer at United Way’s SparkPoint. She suggested that Briana check out the career counseling and job coaching services available at SparkPoint American Canyon.
Briana was matched up with Stacy Lopez, a SparkPoint job coach, who helped improve her resume, practice her interview skills and provided guidance on following up with employers. Stacy also encouraged Briana to apply for an internship position at the American Canyon Chamber of Commerce.
“Stacy gave me the extra motivation and confidence I need to find work,” said Briana, who successfully landed the internship. “The internship at the Chamber of Commerce was also an important building block. It helped me break out of my shell – I spent a lot of time at events, so I learned how to present myself professionally and how to network in the local business community.”
Susan Lane, CEO of the American Canyon Chamber of Commerce who mentored Briana, said, “We treated her like an important member of the team and in no time she was acting like one. She thrived on new experiences and learning new skills which made the experience gratifying for me as well.”
Briana credits the internship with providing her with the confidence and the experience she needed to land her current job as a teller at Tri Counties Bank.
“Now that I’m working at a bank, I have the opportunity to talk with people about their finances every day. I always recommend they go to SparkPoint if they want to connect with services and coaches who can help them improve their financial situations,” Briana said.
