United Way’s Loaned Executive program offers a unique opportunity for Bay Area professionals to give back to the community, while providing their employers with an “out-of-the-box” way to cultivate the next generation of company leaders.
This fall, six Bay Area professionals temporarily gave up their everyday jobs to spend three months working at United Way as Loaned Executives. The Loaned Executives serve as full-time members of our fundraising team, working the phones, delivering sales presentations and coordinating events at Bay Area companies that run United Way campaigns.
Generous Bay Area companies sponsor Loaned Executives by paying their salaries and benefits while they work at United Way. As a result, our organization gains essential manpower during our busiest season, significantly extending our ability to reach donors while keeping costs low. This year, United Way hosted loaned executives from FedEx, UPS, Chevron, DMV and Caltrans.
The benefit to participating companies and the Loaned Executives is two-fold: the program not only boosts employee morale and community rapport, but also enhances professional development for the junior and senior managers who participate. As United Way “ambassadors”, Loaned Executive’s hone their leadership, presentation, negotiation and customer service skills.

Ray Boyer, Caltrans District Branch Chief – Hazardous Waste, shared these thoughts on his experience as a United Way Loaned Executive this fall:
“It has been an incredible experience working at the United Way of the Bay Area as the Caltrans Loaned Executive. There is so much that I have learned in the past four months making my experience here very rewarding.

Caltrans' Ray Boyer was one of six Loaned Executives who worked at United Way during our busy fall campaign season
I’ve had the opportunity to fine tune my public speaking ability. I’ve given so many campaign presentations in the last four months that it’s become second nature. I would not have been able to get this much exposure to public speaking at Caltrans. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet so many incredible individuals in the nonprofit sector, inspiring me to do more.
My position at United Way also brought me an incredible amount of visibility at Caltrans and brought me in touch with Caltrans upper management. The last four months have been an experience that I will always cherish. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.”
