United Way of the Bay Area received news this month that we will receive a $325,000 grant from the IRS to support our Earn It! Keep It! Save It! tax assistance program in 2011. For the third year in a row, our United Way received the second largest grant of the 177 awarded by the IRS across the country – second only to the national AARP Foundation.

Last year, almost 4,000 Earn It! Keep It! Save It! volunteers helped low-wage taxpayers claim more than $57m in refunds
These funds will strengthen the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Bay Area coalition, which prepares more than 50,000 tax returns for low-wage taxpayers at more than 200 free tax sites throughout the Bay Area. It will enhance and underwrite the critical supports provided to the local VITA sites, including marketing and outreach materials, computers and printers to help with tax preparation, training and much more.

We’re recruiting volunteers right now for Earn It! Keep It! Save It! to provide free tax filing help to low- to moderate-income families to help them keep more of the money they have earned. We also need volunteers to greet taxpayers and serve as interpreters at local tax sites. Learn more at www.earnitkeepitsaveit.org.
