It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s public education!

On Monday, September 27, more than 200 United Way supporters gathered for the San Francisco premiere of “WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN,” a documentary about public education reform.  Attendees ranged from business and union leaders, to elected officials, teachers and parents.

The following short video shares perspectives on the documentary from a few of our guests.

Immediately following the screening, United Way hosted a panel discussion, which featured the San Francisco Mayor’s Education Advisor and School Board Vice President Hydra Mendoza, Deputy Superintendent for the San Francisco Unified School District Richard Carranza, and President of United Educators of San Francisco Dennis Kelly.

In addition to sharing their views on the movie,  the panelists spoke about the ingredients necessary for good schools.

Mendoza urged parents to get involved and become informed about what a good school could look like in their communities.

Carranza underscored the need for continued collaboration and conversation among administrators, teachers unions, parents.  He urged members of the business community to become more involved in supporting Bay Area schools.

Kelly shared that the community needs to have “faith in the people doing the work,” referring to the need to recognize the hard work and expertise of teachers in the classroom.

Using the movie as an opportunity to engage and mobilize our community, United Way is leading a social-action campaign in partnership with leading Bay Area education organizations.  Together, we are creating an action plan to improve public schools.   Take action today and sign-up to receive updates about the campaign on United Way’s website.
