As we head into the New Year, United Way wants to make sure that everyone in the Bay Area is prepared for any eventual disasters that may come. Here are some simple and easy things you or your company can do ahead of time, that will pay off huge dividends in case of fires, earthquakes, or other natural disaster.
- Display the contents of an emergency kit at your agency’s reception desk. This will serve as a great visual reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness for your employees or office visitors as they come into the office.
- Create a family emergency plan. Your family may not be together when an emergency happens, so it is important to plan in advance: how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations. Go here to download a family emergency plan template.
- Be informed about the different types of emergencies that can happen in your area and their appropriate responses. Learn more about the hazards that may strike your community, the risks you face from these hazards, and your community’s plans for warning and evacuation.
- Organize an emergency preparedness event for your community or office. This is a great way to show people about the importance of having a family emergency plan and emergency kits in your car, at work and at home.
- Contact your local American Red Cross Chapter to schedule a community presentation or training. Consult with the experts who can offer CPR training, and helpful tips for keeping you and your loved ones safe.
