United Way Campaign Co-chair Mark Edmunds thanks UPS CEO Scott Davis for fostering a culture of giving at UPS
This week, UPS Chief Executive Officer Scott Davis and a group of UPS employees partnered with United Way to volunteer at the Bay Area Crisis Nursery. Mark Edmunds, Vice Chairman and Regional Managing Partner of Deloitte, as well as the Vice Chair of the 2009-2010 United Way of the Bay Area Campaign, was on hand to thank UPS not only for volunteering, but also for their national support: In 2008-09, UPS nationwide was once again number one in employee and corporate giving to United Way.
The Bay Area Crisis Nursery provides short-term residential care for children at risk of abuse or neglect — children whose parents care, but temporarily can’t cope. After a family crisis parents bring their children for a 48-hour stay once a month in the Respite Program. If needed, families receive groceries, children’s clothing and toys, bedding, and household items from the free “Parent Store.”
Parents are often referred to the Bay Area Crisis Nursery through 2-1-1, United Way’s free community information line.
The UPS volunteers worked on three projects at the Nursery. They aerated the soil and put down grass seed, fixed broken concrete, a screen door and a side gate at the nursery’s house for older children. They also painted the play structure and cleaned up the play area. Organization and stocking shelves of children’s clothing and diapers helped prepare space at the Nursery to receive holiday gift toys.
Sister Ann Weltz, executive director of the Bay Area Crisis Nursery, said “The Nursery relies on volunteers, like the UPS employee volunteers, to complete the many ‘honey do’ tasks around the Nursery. This frees up staff to focus on the important task of taking care of children and their parents in their time of need.”
