Early this year, United Way of America launched a contest to find the best story of how people are living united in their communities. Well now a winner has been announced in the LIVE United story search! Ruth, a now 91 year old United Way supporter has long been active with Success by Six, and understands the power that reading can have on a young child’s future. Here in the Bay Area, our Raising A Reader program reaches more than 30,000 kids each year. This take-home book program targets the first five years of life and has proven to be successful. The program has demonstrated a 471% increase in the percentage of low-income parents sharing books with their children five times or more each week. Head Start children using Raising A Reader tested at least twice as high as the national norms on print concepts.
