United Way released 2-1-1 Bay Area call data, which shows the region’s community information line handled 74,646 calls in the first half of 2009, up 35% from the same period in 2008.
During this time period, requests for help with basic needs – such as food, shelter, and clothing – soared 33%, compared to the first half of 2008.  Calls for assistance with food showed the largest increase, up 57% over the same period last year.
