It Starts with a Dream

bernina-contreraseditrsBernina  left Peru in 2001 as a refugee, fleeing the terror of the Shining Path extremist guerillas, as well as a violent marriage. After arriving in California, she worked two jobs, fighting her way out of poverty, when she met a new man. Unfortunately, she again became a victim of domestic violence.

Bernina’s luck changed when her therapist recommended that she call AnewAmerica, a United Way grantee that promotes the long-term economic empowerment of new citizens, immigrants and refugees.

Bernina enrolled in AnewAmerica’s intensive three-year business incubation program, where she learned to write a business plan, develop a budget and marketing strategy, and build her credit. The program aligns with United Way’s strategy to help workers build income through skills and business training.

Bernina also saved $2,000 through AnewAmerica’s Individual Development Account program, which provided a two-to-one match that enabled Bernina to purchase an industrial carpet cleaner and launch a house cleaning business. With her new skills and strong credit, she was able to acquire a $16,750 loan to expand her business.

Bernina’s story does not end there. While she was very proud of her house cleaning business, she also had a dream to pursue a career in cake decorating. She decided it was time to open a second business, and obtained a second loan for $35,000 to open a bake shop.

“I have had this idea for many years, but AnewAmerica gave me the push I needed to make it happen,” Bernina said.

With the income from her two businesses, Bernina is saving for retirement and for her children’s futures. At AnewAmerica, she also learned about social responsibility and is offering baking classes at her new shop.

“This type of community service is like community art, there is a lot of tradition in cake baking and decorating,” Bernina said. “Many Latinos become discouraged because there are not classes offered in Spanish. I plan to motivate the people and help them discover their talents.”
