This summer was more than a break from school for 25 students who took part in Real Estate 4 Tomorrow’s Adults, a new United Way partnership with the real estate community. The students gained invaluable experience through paid summer internships at several Bay Area real estate companies.
“Before working at Cushman and Wakefield this summer, I thought real estate was just about selling houses,” said 19-year-old Antonique W. “I learned about the ‘ins and outs’ of property management, and gained some excellent work experience, which will really strengthen my resume.”
The initiative was created last spring, when United Way partnered with Bay Area real estate executives and MatchBridge, a United Way community project, to create new pathways to employment.
This year, 10 real estate firms collectively pledged $100,000 to underwrite the first 25 internships. Eight of those firms formed the program’s Founders’ Circle, contributing $10,000 each year
for five years and establishing intern positions at their companies.
“The initiative is a winner all around – for United Way, for kids and the local real estate community,” said Connie Moore, President and CEO of BRE Properties, a member of the initiative’s Founders’ Circle. “It is so important for San Francisco’s economy, for the quality of life here and for the future of the real estate industry, to encourage these young people to be part of our workforce.”
