    Center for the Child Care Workforce, March 2002
    A summary of the latest county information about child care teachers, directors and family child care providers. This CCW report also compiles the latest national and state data.
  • California Child Care Workforce Reports
    Center for the Child Care Workforce, California Resource and Referral Network, and Center for the Study of Child Care Employment, UC Berkeley.
    Two recent comprehensive studies describe family child care and center-based workers in eight counties:
    1. California Family Child Care Workforce Reports describes findings from an eight-county study of family child care providers in Alameda, Kern, Monterey, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties.
    2. California Center-Based Workforce Reports describes findings from an eight-county study of the child care center-based workforce in Alameda, Kern, Monterey, San Francisco, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties. This study will soon be available online.

A Profile of the Alameda County Child Care Center Workforce 1995-2001
This study explores trends in child care staffing between 1995 and 2001 in Alameda County, during a period of unparalleled economic growth in the California Bay Area. Study subjects include 140 programs representing 313 sites and over 3,000 child care center teaching and administrative staff. Download the study.

A Profile of the San Mateo County Child Care Workforce
This study describes 104 center-based programs representing 157 sites and over 1,000 child care teaching and administrative staff. Family child care providers were surveyed separately to determine their educational and demographic characteristics, earnings, expenses, and working conditions. Download the study.

State of California Research
Research describing the child care workforce in the State of California that is available online includes:

  • A Study of State-Funded Pre-Kindergarten Child Care Staffing in Five States
    Center for the Child Care Workforce, 2002
    This study describes findings about state-funded prekindergarten staffing in five states: California, Georgia, Illinois, New York and Texas. California's prekindergarten program, along with others included in the study, have grown significantly over the last five years. Special attention is paid to the differences between prekindergarten staff and compensation in program operating in public schools and those in community-based programs.
