It Was A Full House

Emerging Leaders’ held their inaugural casino style fundraiser Going All In for Bay Area Youth on April 10th. Located at the swanky Julia Morgan Ballroom, the evening featured roaring casino tables and a packed dance floor  inspired by local favorites Chris Clouse and DJ Solomon.  Generous underwriting by Bank of America allowed for 100% of ticket purchases to benefit United Way’s Community School Partnerships. Fundraising efforts were driven by a team of Emerging Leaders, led by Amy Rose of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey (Host Committee Chair) and Noah Lichtenstein.

Spring Benefit for Local Youth

Matchbridge seeking volunteers

MatchBridge, a United Way of the Bay Area Community Project, is seeking volunteers who are fluent in at least one of the following languages:  Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and/or Spanish on Monday, February 8 from  4:00 to 6:00 pm at United Way offices at 221 Main Street in San Francisco. Volunteers are needed to  assist with determining the language fluency level of MatchBridge youth who are applying for Language Translator positions with United Way’s Earn it/Keep it/Save it (EKS) program. EKS provides free incomes tax preparation to families who qualify throughout San Francisco.

MatchBridge youth applying to be Language Translators will assist non-English speaking families having their income taxes prepared at various Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout the City. MatchBridge youth applying will be screened for language fluency and interviewed by EKS and MatchBridge staff on Monday, February 8, 2010.

Volunteers are needed to help determine the language fluency level of youth applying for the translator positions (glossary of commonly used “tax” phrases, sentences  and words will be provided by EKS).  A short ‘training’ will be provided to volunteers at 4:00 before the youth arrive at 4:30.

Please contact Emily Linaman at elinaman@uwba.org or 415.808.4313 if you are interested in volunteering as a language fluency assessor for MatchBridge youth.

Emerging Leaders brighten the holidays

Good times and good vibes were had by all who gathered at Zebulon to sponsor holiday gifts for local youth in need. Emerging Leaders met at the SOMA lounge to select a wish for a local underprivileged youth, and later shopped and delivered  gifts for 27 young people this holiday season!

Excitement was in the air when the gifts – each sought out and wrapped especially for a local youth by and Emerging Leader – were delivered to youth at Edgewood Center for Children and Families,  and to Rec Connect’s Gilman Clubhouse in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood.

Many thanks to each of you for joining Emerging Leaders and United Way in supporting our local youth! And, thanks to John Post of Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP for leading the effort!

Call from the 2-1-1 Call Center

One of the information and referal specialists sent me this email. The caller’s name is changed for confidentiality.  So many people are struggling with the high costs of food and 2-1-1 helps people like “Agnes” every day.

*******************************

Agnes called me about a week ago looking to get information on the supplemental food program. She is 72 years old and living off of social security and a widow’s pension. She said with the amount of income she is receiving and the increasing prices of everything today she barely has enough to get by each month. Unfortunately, the supplemental food program, which provides a box of food each month to seniors, currently has an 8 month – 1 year wait list to get in. I was able to give Agnes the phone number to get on the wait list for that program along with another food pantry in her neighborhood she could go to in the mean time. I also explained what food stamps were and gave her the number to call and see if she was eligible for them. I spoke to Agnes a week later. She called me as soon as she had gotten back from the food pantry. She said she was so happy with all of the wonderful food she had gotten. She listed everything she had, as she took them each out of her bag:

3 onions, 4 potatoes, 4 bananas, orange, brown rice, black beans, 3 artichokes, raspberries, packaged lettuce for salad, carrots, purple cabbage, and chicken breast

She said she had never expected to get fresh food and was so grateful for what she had received.  She also asked if she could go back again, and I told her they would be there every week.”

NALC food drive this saturday!

The 17th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive to “Stamp out Hunger” will take place this Saturday, May 9th. Just put your non-perishable food in a bag next to your mailbox, and your carrier will collect it.  Last year NALC collected over 73.1 million pounds of food for food banks and shelters.
